Mapache is an online mapping tool focusing on Central America as a region. It is the result of an all-volunteer effort from the CAEE/ACEA group, the first Geo-CAEE product. It is a GIS (Geographical Information Systems) software framework for presenting interactive maps covering all of Central America. With this framework and with appropriate geographical datasets (including real-time data), our goal is to put together applications focused on particular themes: ecosystems, biodiversity, climate, geology (volcanic eruptions, earthquakes), oceans, etc. Currently, Mapache only allows for viewing information. In the future, we intend to redistribute GIS data for others to use via file downloads or live remote connections using Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) web services. A wealth of regional ecological and environmental data already exists; our goal is to make existing information more easily accessible. See our list of current tasks and future enhancements.

Mapache is built entirely with free, Open Source software, starting with an Apache web server running on Linux. The interactive GIS application uses the University of Minnesota MapServer, a flexible open source online mapping package; we also have relied on other important Open Source GIS libraries, especially GDAL/OGR. With this software framework, we can easily put together new applications. The software behind Mapache can be used freely by any other group in Central America and elsewhere, for any non-commercial purpose.
We have "adopted" species common in Central America (see our other pet, the garrobo). The Mapache or Mapachín (raccoon, Procyon lotor) is a curious mammal that is constantly exploring the terrain. MAPaches obviously like maps!
Mapache es una herramienta de mapeo por internet enfocada en América Central como región. Es el resultado de un esfuerzo totalmente voluntario del grupo CAEE/ACEA y el primer producto de Geo-CAEE. Una estructura informática SIG (Sistemas de Información Geográfica) para presentar mapas interactivos con cobertura de toda América Central. Con esta estructura y con datos geográficos adecuados (incluyendo datos en tiempo real), nuestra meta es ensamblar aplicaciones temáticas: ecosistemas, biodiversidad, clima, geología (erupciones volcánicas, terremotos), océanos, etc. Actualmente, Mapache sólo permite la visualización de información. En el futuro, nuestra intención es redistribuir datos SIG por medio de acceso a archivos o conecciones remotas utilizando servicios web del Consorcio Geoespacial Abierto (OGC).
