You can use SSH Secure Shell Transfer Client to create new folders on your web site. SSH is also used to upload web pages to your UW web site. In Simple Site the web pages are created directly on the web server. In SSH, you must first create the pages and then upload them to the web server. To get started with SSH you must first log in to the web server (you will use your NetID and password). Note that your "Host Name" (the name of the web server for students) is dante. And the complete address is dante.u.washington.edu. When you are successfully logged in, you will see:
Note that you can see the files on your computer on the left and your web site (inside the folder public_html) on the right. To upload web pages to the web server, you only need to drag the files from the left to the right. To work on your web site you must double click on the folder public_html. To create folders, click on the new folder icon as shown above. When you click on the icon you are presented with a new folder and a cursor blinking inside the name, so you can type in the new folder name.
We want to create two folders, one called template (to hold the template based Simple Site pages) and one called scratch (to hold the web pages we create from scratch with Word and upload to the server). Below is what the two folders should look like in your web site. |
