The Heard Island Feasibility Test consisted of acoustic transmissions from the
M/V Cory Chouest just to the southeast of Heard Island in the southern Indian
Ocean to acoustic receivers throughout the world. The site was chosen because
acoustic transmissions from there were likely to reach both coasts of the
United States. The receivers were of a wide variety, including bottom and
vertical arrays of hydrophones, ship-borne receivers, towed hydrophone arrays,
and small portable receivers designed to be easily deployed from a ship during
the short period of acoustic transmissions. The collaboration was international
in scope and enthusiastic in character.
