Building a Small Two Page Web Site |
|
---|---|
How to create a small local web site on your computer. Step 1: Start with My Computer and create a new folder where you want the web site to be saved (My Documents would be fine). To create a new folder, click on the File Menu and choose New, then folder off to the right. Then, type in a name for the folder: Now, you are ready to start creating web pages. We will be saving the web pages into the folder we just created. We will build a two page web site, with links back and forth between the pages and links to other Internet sites. Start Microsoft Word. Just so we will know what page we are on, type "Page 1" at the top of the page. Now save the page into the folder we created. Name the page "page1.htm" and save it as a web page (see below): Do not close the first page - we will be back to add some more in a minute. Next, create a new blank page to be our second page. Click on the "piece of paper icon" with the blue dot in the middle right below the File Menu (see below): Now, you should have a new page. Type Page 2 at the top of the page. And save it as a web page in the same folder. Make sure you choose Web Page, not Single Web Page (*.MHT). Note we are saving these pages before we put a lot on them. Now, we will create links between the two pages. On Page One, type in the words "Go to Page 2". This is called the "link text". It can be any words you want. Now, we want to turn the "link text" into a link. Select the link text (click and drag across the word to highlight it). Then click on the Hyperlink creator icon. Then click on the page2.htm icon and click OK. Now, on page two, type in the words "Go to page 1". Select it, and click on the Insert Hyperlink button. Finish the link to page1.htm. Now let's add a link to an Internet site. Instead of finding an educational site right now let's just create a link to Google. Type the word "Google". Select it and click on the Insert Hyperlink button. This time, in the bottom Address box, type in: "www.google.com". Then click OK. Save both pages again. And now, we will test our two pages and their links. Minimize the two Word files. Start Internet Explorer. Click on the File menu and choose Open. Then Browse. Then find your folder and the file. Find your file (in the folder we created) and open it. Last, test all three links. You should be able to switch back and forth between the two pages and also go to Google. Finished page is shown below: Next week, we'll add in more colorful content for the pages. |
