Why Would a Local Web Site be Useful?

Next

A local website can only be viewed by the person sitting at the computer where the local web site is located. How could this be useful?

If you have computers in your classroom connected to the Internet, then occasionally you want students to find some information as part of a writing assignment or research. Often, when students are allowed to do the searching on their own, they run into problems. They find popup windows claiming they have won, they find sites which contain the search terms but are promoting vacation travel locations, or they find university level dissertations. If the teacher preselects some web sites and lets the student go to those, the searching can be effective. The teacher has found sites that have the information without popups or You have won!!! messages.

If the teacher creates a web page with these preselected links on it and makes it easy to open in a browser, then students can find the information the teacher desires quickly and efficiently. In addition, the teacher can add in other directions, assignments, or messages to go with the links on the page. The web page described here would support a unit of instruction in the classroom.
