Creating a Links Page - Why?

Next

As a classroom teacher, you will need to take responsibility for your own professional development (also known as professional growth). Professional development or growth is your improvement in skills as a teacher.

"Teachers have extensive formal training, including 4-years of college classroom work, in many cases 1-year of apprenticeship, and post-BA credits to maintain certification. Teaching has been a profession, not unlike many others (such as medical and legal) that requires constant and ongoing learning."

The Internet in the last few years has become a storehouse of information regarding teaching and learning, a virtual worldwide library. Learning how to find relevant information regarding your own professional growth as a teacher can help you in several ways:

  • What areas in the world of teaching and learning interest you?
  • What challenges are you struggling with in the classroom? Are solutions already available?
  • What is the lastest thinking regarding teaching and learning?

A "links page" is a web page that contains annotated links to web sites of interest to you. This web page can be used on any computer that has access to the Internet. The reason to create a links page is because you may not have time to read or absorb the information in a web site when you discover it. Pasting the link into a links page allows you to return easily to the site. You can accomplish the same thing by using the Favorites (or Bookmarks) list. The problem with using the Favorites list is that the list gets unmanagably long and difficult to use. Pasting links into a links page keeps your Favorites list shorter. Also, as you begin work on your Masters degree, you will want to have ready access to valuable sources.

In this tutorial, we will learn how to create the links page in Microsoft Word, copy and paste in links rapidly, and save the page as a web page. Last, we will learn how to open the web page for use.
