10 February 2010 - Nunavik Delegation in Seattle
On behalf of the Canadian Studies Center, I was honored to host Pita Aatami (front, center), President of the Makivik Corporation, his legal advisor, Jean-François Arteau (right), and my dear friend, Donat Savoie, President, Inuit, Arctic and Circumpolar Affairs. They came to Seattle to meet with business leaders and to discuss an educational partnership with the UW. To my right is Quentin Red Eagle Smith, one of our graduate students in Sociology; Judy Howard, our Associate Dean for Social Sciences; Anand Yang, the Director of the Jackson School of International Studies; Augustine McCaffery with the Graduate School; and our Chair, Dan Hart, also co-Director of the Native Voices documentary filmmaking program. |

21-26 June 2009 - 31st Annual K-12 STUDY CANADA Summer Institute
At the end of May, 20 educators participated in our K-12 STUDY CANADA Institute in Vancouver and Whistler. The group was wonderful. I provided a presentation on Ilanaaq, the little stone fellow on the 2010 Olympic logo. |

22 May 2009 - ICCS Certificate of
Merit
In May I was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the International
Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS) in Québec City. The
certificate recognizes "the exceptional contributions
made by individuals to the development of Canadian
Studies." I was most honored by this recognition. On my
right is Klaus-Dieter Ertler, President-Elect of ICCS.

19 May 2009 - Sustainable Society
One of my highlights this spring was addressing the students in the UW course by James Karr, Marine Affairs, Attaining a Sustainable Society. My talk, "The Inuit and Foreign Policy – Climate Change, Human Rights and Arctic Sovereignty," seemed to hold much interest for the students whose interests ranged from music, to business, to marine affairs.

15 May 2009 - 12th Annual UW Undergraduate Research Symposium
I could not have been more proud than to see our Task Force on Arctic Sovereignty students have their research accepted at the UW Undergraduate Research Symposium and to watch their smooth delivery. Kristen Olson, Gus Andreasen and Andrew Schwartz presented for the "team." Are they not beautiful!

13 March 2009 - SIS 495C Task Force on Arctic Sovereignty Expert Evaluation
Rob Huebert, on my right, is with Military and Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary. He was our expert evaluator for the Task Force. Vince Gallucci and I co-taught the course and are delighted to celebrate the success of the students with Rob.

10 March 2009 - Minnesota Humanities Center Canadian Studies Workshop
These are the 20 wonderful Minnesota educators who participated in the two-day workshop, "Building Knowledge and Understanding about Canada and Canada-US Relations." I gave two presentations - one on Canadian symbols and the second on the 2010 Olympic logo and the Inuit inuksuk. As Douglas Jackson, our founder, passed away during my trip, the presentations were dedicated to him.

In February, Michael Treleaven (left) and I served as external evaluators for the University of Northern British Columbia, College of Arts, Social and Health Sciences where a Canadian Studies program is being considered. Gary Wilson, Political Science and head of Northern Programs, hosted our visit. |

29 January 2009 - Arctic Sovereignty Fact-Finding Mission to Ottawa
These are the fabulous students in the Task Force on Arctic Sovereignty. We had the fortune of hearing the Honourable Paul Okalik, first premier of Nunavut, at the Carleton University Great Grads Speaker Series Event held at Library and Archives Canada, Ottawa during our one-week, fact-finding mission to Ottawa.
