Mandan in Winter

[Indian Dancer]

Hopping Bear

Lewis and Clark were friendly with the Mandan, but did not like the Clatsop Indians because the Clatsop were used to traders and drove a hard bargain. The Indians were not let in the fort after sundown because they stole things from the expedition. When the explorers left the fort to go back home, they stole a canoe, and Clark said, "This makes up for the six elk they stole during the winter."
