[Indian on Pony]

Lewis and Clark concluded that their original route through the Rocky Mountains was too long and took them too far south, so they decided to split up to find a shorter route on the way back. After crossing the Rocky Mountains, Lewis followed the original route while Clark mostly followed the Yellowstone River to Fort Mandan, where they met up again. They traveled together back to St. Louis.
