Clinical Information Systems

When I started working at UWMC, I had two positions.  I worked as an RN on the inpatient Acute Care Rehab unit half time, and as a Systems Analyst Programmer 3 the other half of the time.  My principle computer work involved configuring and programming changes in our clinical information system (CIS).   The system is Eclypsis Sunrise Critical Care.   Nurses, doctors, and other clinicians use CIS to document patient care, information, and concerns. It is an electronic medical record.

In July of 2005, I took a full time position as a Clinical Systems Analyst.  My current work still involves programming the changes in the system;  however I'm now much more involved in nursing workflow analysis.  Some of the changes in the system can be a big job like creating a new form to a small job like correcting formatting or spelling errors left by past programmers.

CIS runs on a Sun Solaris 5.6 Unix operating system.  To make changes, I use the native Unix text editor vi (Visual Editor) to write in code and edit system files. I also use the vendor tools supplied by Eclipsys. Once the changes are made, I validate the system dictionary, run a build script and then an install script. Once the changes are installed, I perform the preliminary testing. If the preliminary testing is successful, I pass the changes on to other clinical analysts for further testing.

UWMC is in the process of transitioning to a new application, Cerner Corporation's PowerChart.  PowerChart is more of an MS Windows based system.   I'm currently involved in testing reports for this system.
