• Term A: June 19-July 19
• Term B: July 20-August 18

Pay percentage and dates

• 5-credit course term A or 15-credit course first segment: one month pay at 100%; pay dates July 10, July 25
• 15-credit course second segment: one month pay at 100%; pay dates July 25, August 10
• 5-credit course term B or 15-credit course third segment: one month pay at 100%; pay dates August 10, August 25
• 5-credit full-term course: two months pay at 50%; pay dates July 11, July 25, August 10, August 25
• For all of the above, pay for other duties may affect timing of Summer Quarter teaching pay

For faculty:

• For faculty on nine- or ten-month appointments, the UW Benefits Office may deduct all insurance payments for the summer from the June 26 paycheck, as described in a May 27, 2016 memorandum to faculty on 9- through 10-month appointments.

For graduate student instructors:

• Summer supplement
  • Graduate student instructors who teach less than three months in summer receive a 20% summer pay supplement.
• Course registration requirement
  • Graduate students teaching in summer must register for at least two credits. (See General Conditions of Appointments on the Graduate School's Information About Salary Schedules page.)
  • Credits may be taken in A term, B term, or the full summer quarter, regardless of when teaching is done.
  • Taking fewer than five credits or working more than half-time may trigger FICA and Medicare tax withholding. (See the chart on the UW Tax Office FICA page.)
• Insurance coverage
  • For all Academic Student Employees, as of August 30, 2016 the Graduate Appointee Insurance Program (GAIP) Summer Quarter Coverage page said,

    You're covered by GAIP for the summer if you had UW-paid coverage during the previous three quarters (fall, winter, and spring quarters). In this case, you're automatically enrolled in summer coverage, and you remain covered even if you aren't working or taking classes during the summer. Coverage ends on September 30.

  • For graduate student instructors, teaching in summer may provide insurance coverage even if the above condition doesn't hold. The GAIP Summmer Quarter Coverage page lists ways to continue your GAIP coverage if you weren't covered by GAIP for all of the three previous quarters. The right side of each page of the GAIP description lists contacts for questions.
  • Academic Student Employees with dependents on GAIP still must make dependent payments, as described on the GAIP Summmer Quarter Coverage page.
