We celebrate not only academic success and groundbreaking research, but also the passion, initiative, and innovation our students bring to every challenge. This month, we\u2019re proud to honor six exceptional students who embody the very best of our community through their creativity, leadership, and dedication to making a difference.<\/p>\n<h3>HUI-HSUAN CHAN \u2013 2025 MAGNUSON SCHOLAR<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-33493 wp-img\" src=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/HUI-HSUAN.jpg\" alt=\"Hui-Hsuan Chan\" width=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/HUI-HSUAN.jpg 500w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/HUI-HSUAN-300x375.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/HUI-HSUAN-200x250.jpg 200w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/HUI-HSUAN-375x469.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>CHOICE PhD student <strong>Hui-Hsuan Chan<\/strong> was selected as the School\u2019s 2025 Magnuson Scholar\u2014an honor presented annually to one student from each of UW\u2019s six Health Sciences schools. Funded by the Warren G. Magnuson Institute, the award recognizes both academic achievement and the potential for impactful research in fields like diabetes and public health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m honored to be selected as a 2025 Magnuson Scholar representing the School of Pharmacy,\u201d Hui-Hsuan said. \u201cThis award provides generous support for my continued research into improving healthcare sustainability and managing high-cost chronic conditions like diabetes. I\u2019m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to meaningful, lasting impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>ZIZI ELSISI \u2013 OUTSTANDING DISSERTATION AWARD<\/h3>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-33492 wp-img\" src=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/ZIZI.jpg\" alt=\"Zizi Elsisi\" width=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/ZIZI.jpg 500w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/ZIZI-300x375.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/ZIZI-200x250.jpg 200w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/ZIZI-375x469.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>Zizi Elsisi<\/strong>, a PhD graduate of the CHOICE Institute, was honored with the 2025 Outstanding Dissertation Award for her rigorous and timely work on subscription-based payment models for Hepatitis C treatment in Louisiana and Washington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an incredible honor to receive the Outstanding Dissertation Award for my research on subscription-based payment models for hepatitis C treatment in Louisiana and Washington,\u201d Zizi said. \u201cThis work highlights how innovative financing strategies can improve access to cure medications for vulnerable populations. I\u2019m proud to contribute to research that bridges policy and real-world impact. I\u2019m especially grateful to my advisor, <strong>Dr. Anirban Basu<\/strong>, and the CHOICE Institute for their invaluable mentorship and support throughout this journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>CHRIS ARIAN \u2013 OUTSTANDING DISSERTATION AWARD<\/h3>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-33494 wp-img\" src=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/CHRIS-1.jpg\" alt=\"Chris Arian\" width=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/CHRIS-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/CHRIS-1-300x375.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/CHRIS-1-200x250.jpg 200w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/CHRIS-1-375x469.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>Chris Arian<\/strong>, from the Department of Pharmaceutics, also received the 2025 Outstanding Dissertation Award for his development of an intestinal microphysiological system (MPS) using a long-term cultured enteroid monolayer model. His innovative research is poised to significantly advance the field of drug metabolism and drug\u2013drug interaction (DDI) prediction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an incredible honor to receive the School of Pharmacy&#8217;s Outstanding Dissertation\u00a0Award,\u201d said Chris. \u201cAchieving this award would not have been possible without the support of my mentors, <strong>Dr. Ken Thummel<\/strong> and <strong>Dr. Ed Kelly<\/strong>, my partner Marelle for her encouragement and presence in my life, and my lab mates for their friendship and scientific discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>AURORA AUTHEMENT \u2013 GRADUATE STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD (PHARMACEUTICS)<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-33490 wp-img\" src=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/AURORA.jpg\" alt=\"Aurora Authement\" width=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/AURORA.jpg 500w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/AURORA-300x375.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/AURORA-200x250.jpg 200w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/AURORA-375x469.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>PhD candidate <strong>Aurora Authement<\/strong> was recognized with the School\u2019s 2025 Graduate Student Leadership Award for her outstanding contributions to the Pharmaceutics Department and her mentorship within the student community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m honored to receive the Graduate Student Leadership Award,\u201d said Aurora. \u201cThis recognition affirms the importance of fostering an inclusive, collaborative scientific community, and I\u2019m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the growth and success of my peers.
