{"id":31815,"date":"2023-12-05T08:49:27","date_gmt":"2023-12-05T16:49:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/?p=31815"},"modified":"2025-04-16T08:52:36","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T15:52:36","slug":"uwsop-faculty-receive-nih-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/uwsop-faculty-receive-nih-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"UWSOP Faculty Receive $4.5M NIH Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A team consisting of four UW School of Pharmacy faculty recently received a 5-year, $4.5 million grant from the National Institute of Health\u2019s (NIH) Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health &amp; Human Development (NICHD) to launch a Transporter Elucidation Center at the University of Washington (<a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/uwtec\/\">UWTEC<\/a>). The mission of the <a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/uwtec\/\">UWTEC<\/a> is to identify, quantify, and functionally characterize solute carrier (SLC) and ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters in the human placenta and developing gut to better understand nutrient uptake and drug exposure to the fetus, neonates, and infants.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"wp-image-31816 wp-img alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/uwsop-nih-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Clockwise from top: Ed Kelly, Jash Unadkat, Sam Arnold, Joanne Wang\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/uwsop-nih-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/uwsop-nih-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/uwsop-nih-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/uwsop-nih-375x375.jpg 375w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/uwsop-nih.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The UWSOP research team includes Drs. Jash Unadkat (PI), Joanne Wang (Co-PI), Sam Arnold, and Ed Kelly from the Department of Pharmaceutics, along with collaborators from the UW School of Medicine, and Dr. Nicholas Leronimakis from the Madigan Army Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>The research team has unique and diverse expertise, ranging from state-of-art proteomics, transporter biology and functional analysis, mass spectrometry and imaging, to human intestinal organoids and microphysiological systems, and ex vivo human placenta perfusion models.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/uwtec\/\">UWTEC<\/a> is one of four newly created national centers focusing on a better understanding of mechanisms involved in the uptake and disposition of drugs, nutrients, and dietary substances during early human development.
