{"id":28937,"date":"2022-03-03T11:09:40","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T19:09:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/?p=28937"},"modified":"2022-04-13T08:41:19","modified_gmt":"2022-04-13T15:41:19","slug":"juan-garcia-selected-latino-center-for-health-scholars-fellowship-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/juan-garcia-selected-latino-center-for-health-scholars-fellowship-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Juan Garcia Selected to Participate In Latino Center for Health Scholars Fellowship Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"figure figure-caption wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/Juan-Garcia-1.jpg\" alt=\"Juan Garcia\" width=\"200\" height=\"1280\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Juan Garcia <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Juan Garcia, a PharmD student at UW School of Pharmacy, has been selected to participate in the Latino Center for Health 3rd Annual Student Scholars Fellowship Program in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>This fellowship program plays an important role in helping meet the demand for Latinx and Spanish-speaking health care workers in Washington state by providing crucial financial and community support to students in the health sciences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe shortage of bilingual and bicultural health professionals in our state is pronounced,\u201d says Dr. Gino Aisenberg, associate professor for the UW School of Social Work and co-director of LCH. \u201cThe Latino Center for Health is staunchly committed to help expand the state\u2019s health professions pipeline by supporting the next generation of leaders and scholars who are doing excellent work to promote the health and wellbeing of our state\u2019s Latinx communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Juan participated in a Q&amp;A session at a central district high school, talking to students about health care professions and steps to get there, support systems, and mentorship opportunities. He is looking forward to sharing more insights with the local community and connecting with other professionals with similar interests in pharmacy and outreach.<\/p>\n<p>Juan notes that trust-building and authenticity will play integral roles in his success as a health care professional moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing that representative\u2014that person of color\u2014providing comfort and trust in patients like, \u2018that person knows my culture and what matters to us, how we feel about health care, how we feel about medications and medication safety.\u2019 That\u2019s what I hope to do with my PharmD degree is provide that trust to our patient population and represent people of color and our Latinx community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Juan Garcia, a PharmD student at UW School of Pharmacy, has been selected to participate in the Latino Center for Health 3rd Annual Student Scholars Fellowship Program in 2022.
