{"id":23359,"date":"2019-12-20T07:44:46","date_gmt":"2019-12-20T15:44:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/?p=23359"},"modified":"2025-01-15T13:04:48","modified_gmt":"2025-01-15T21:04:48","slug":"choice-institute-researchers-find-that-rural-hospital-closures-increase-patient-mortality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/choice-institute-researchers-find-that-rural-hospital-closures-increase-patient-mortality\/","title":{"rendered":"CHOICE Institute Researchers Find that Rural Hospital Closures Increase Patient Mortality"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"figure figure-caption wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gujral-Kritee.jpeg\" alt=\"Dr. Kritee Gujral\" width=\"222\" height=\"314\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Kritee Gujral <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>About 15% of hospitals have closed since 1990, and rates of hospital closure\u2014particularly in rural areas\u2014have increased over the last decade.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Kritee Gujral and <a href=\"\/people\/anirban-basu\/\">Dr. Anirban Basu\u2019s<\/a> recent National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) working paper, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w26182\">The Impact of Rural and Urban Hospital Closures on Inpatient Mortality<\/a>,\u201d which used California\u2019s inpatient data from 1995-2011, showed that rural closures increase patient mortality by 5.9%, whereas urban closures have no measurable impact.<\/p>\n<p>As previous studies had provided mixed evidence regarding the impact of closures on patients, with no large-scale published study showing adverse patient impact of hospital closures, their work calls attention<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"figure figure-caption wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/basu_anirban.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Anirban Basu\" width=\"222\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Anirban Basu <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>to this important issue and its patient-level impact, as hospital closures, especially in rural areas, are on the rise. Policymakers should ensure that patients, particularly vulnerable ones, have access to emergency transportation following a hospital closure, the authors say.<\/p>\n<p>This work has received press coverage by several media outlets: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/rural-hospital-closings-cause-mortality-rates-rise-study-finds-n1048046\">NBC news<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyyonder.com\/rural-roundup-closing-rural-hospitals-leads-to-higher-mortality-rates\/2019\/08\/27\/\">The Daily Yonder<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/up-front\/2019\/08\/29\/hutchins-roundup-overstated-inflation-impact-of-hospital-closures-and-more\/\">The Brookings Institution<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/healthcare\/reports\/2019\/09\/09\/474001\/rural-hospital-closures-reduce-access-emergency-care\/\">Center for American Progress<\/a>\u00a0and Iowa Public Radio.
