Scott Grimm Scholar and Medicinal Chemistry graduate student Dennis Goulet (Bill Atkins lab) has been awarded the prestigious Magnuson Scholarship for 2017-2018, receiving the $30,000 award on the basis of his outstanding academic performance and potential contributions to research in the health sciences. The scholarship is funded from a $2 million endowment from the Warren G. Magnuson Institute for Biomedical Research and Health Professions Training. The University names six Magnuson Scholars annually, one from each of the health sciences schools. Awardees are selected based on their academic performance and potential contributions to health sciences research.<\/p>\n

Dennis joined the Atkins lab in 2014 and was selected as a trainee on the NIH-sponsored Pharmacological Sciences Training Grant. Dr. Atkins noted, “Dennis is certainly deserving of this recognition, and I’m lucky to work with him.” As a Magnuson Scholar, Dennis will focus on how fundamental biophysical properties of proteins are related to their safety and efficacy as therapeutics. “As one example,” said Dennis, “we are trying to understand how binding of antibodies to certain receptors affects their stability in the serum.” Such research could be used to moderate the biological half-life of antibody-based therapeutics, allowing patients to receive IV drugs less frequently, while maintaining an efficacious dose.<\/p>\n

“It is such an honor to be selected for this prestigious award,” said Dennis. “I am humbled to be representing Medicinal Chemistry and the School of Pharmacy among such a talented group of scholars.”<\/p>\n
