border: 1px solid gray; border-radius: 10px; margin-left: 10px;\" src=\"http:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/newstudents2015_web_cropped-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"new students\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/newstudents2015_web_cropped-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/newstudents2015_web_cropped-250x193.jpg 250w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/newstudents2015_web_cropped.jpg 582w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11033\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Front: Modestas Filipavicius, Lorela Paco<br \/> Back: Dylan Ross, Eleanor Vane <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At a combined 2015 orientation event with the department of Pharmaceutics, <a href=\"http:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/department-of-medicinal-chemistry\/\" target=\"_blank\">Medicinal Chemistry<\/a> chair Kent Kunze welcomed four new students into our graduate program: Modestas Filipavicius, Lorela Paco, Dylan Ross, and Eleanor Vane.\u00a0 Pharmaceutics has four students entering their graduate program and one student entering their masters program.\u00a0 Welcome, one and all!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Modestas Filipavicius <\/strong>was born in Lithuania, finished the International Baccalaureate at RCN United World College in Norway, and spent a year in Northern India teaching English and first aid.\u00a0 He then earned his BA in both Chemistry and Biology at Macalester College (St. Paul, MN).\u00a0 Modestas worked in Med Chem Associate Professor Kelly Lee&#8217;s lab this summer, investigating the HIV envelope glycoprotein expression.\u00a0 His major research interest is the structural biology of viruses.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11051\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11051\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"figure figure-caption wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11051 size-sidebar\" style=\"float: left; border: 1px solid gray; border-radius: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" src=\"http:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/O2015_gen_sean_w-250x242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/O2015_gen_sean_w-250x242.jpg 250w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/O2015_gen_sean_w-300x291.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/O2015_gen_sean_w-620x600.jpg 620w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/O2015_gen_sean_w.jpg 826w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11051\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dean Sullivan (left), chairs Thummel (Pceut, 1st row) and Kunze (Med Chem, 2nd row) are ready to begin orientation. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Lorela Paco<\/strong> was born in Athens, Greece and raised in Albania.\u00a0 She attended the United World College in Trieste, Italy before earning her BA in Chemistry with a Biochemistry emphasis at Macalester College.\u00a0 Lorela was a Mayo Clinic Innovations Scholar, working with a Mayo investigator on a new drug submission.\u00a0 She was a summer student at the University of Arizona&#8217;s Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine.\u00a0 Lorela is interested in Cytochrome P450 research and the interface between chemistry and biology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dylan Ross <\/strong>is a Washington native, earning his BS in Biochemistry from the UW.\u00a0 During that time he worked at PhaseRX, a local therapeutics company, where he performed a wide range of bioanalytical studies.\u00a0 Dylan also worked with Med Chem Professor Bill Atkins on a chiral chromatographic resolution of glutathione conjugates of hydroxynonenal, and as a volunteer in Assistant Professor Abhi Nath&#8217;s lab.\u00a0 He is interested in the basis of functional and catalytic promiscuity in drug-metabolizing enzymes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11035\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11035\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"figure figure-caption wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11035 size-half\" style=\"float: right; border: 1px solid gray; border-radius: 10px; margin-left: 10px;\" src=\"http:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/O2015_gen_crowd4w-300x229.jpg\" alt=\"crowd having refreshments\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/O2015_gen_crowd4w-300x229.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/O2015_gen_crowd4w-250x191.jpg 250w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/O2015_gen_crowd4w-620x473.jpg 620w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/O2015_gen_crowd4w-108x81.jpg 108w, https:\/\/staff.washington.edu\/twentzel\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/O2015_gen_crowd4w.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11035\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">After the welcome speeches, refreshments! <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Eleanor Vane<\/strong> graduated from Clarkson College in Potsdam, NY with a BS in Biomolecular Science and a 4.0 GPA.\u00a0 She worked at Carnegie Mellon University, characterizing a promiscuous protein&#8217;s interaction with organic dyes for their use in a new fluorescence labeling scheme.\u00a0 Eleanor was also an Amgen Scholar at UC Berkeley, and she entered the Biological Physics, Structure and Design program at UW in the fall of 2014.\u00a0 Also in 2014, Eleanor was awarded a five-year Fellowship in the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program.\u00a0 She has joined Abhi Nath&#8217;s lab as a grad student in Medicinal Chemistry.
