\"Graduate Medicinal Chemistry<\/a> graduate student Mavis Li (Atkins lab) has received an award from the Hope Barnes Fellowship Fund. Hope Barnes was a Med Chem graduate student who died in a climbing accident in 1991. Hope\u2019s family established The Hope Barnes Graduate Fellowship to support and encourage talented graduate students in medicinal chemistry. The Fund will pay Mavis\u2019s stipend and tuition for summer and fall quarters 2015, in addition to a $1,000 recognition award.<\/p>\n

Working in the Bill Atkins lab, Mavis is researching the structure and functions of p-glycoprotein (P-gp), a protein which acts as a drug transporter, pumping drugs out of cells in the body. Not enough is understood about the effect of P-gp on the bioavailability and effectiveness of certain drugs.<\/p>\n

“I am grateful to benefit from the generosity of Hope Barnes\u2019s family,” said Mavis. “This award will support my work with P-gp and how it affects the behavior of some important drugs that patients rely on.”<\/p>\n
