Applications must be submitted by January 15, 2027 for admission to begin the program in Autumn Quarter 2027. <strong>Although the final deadline is May 3, 2027, the department strongly encourages applicants to submit their materials by January 15, 2027, as admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis. We will not accept any application materials (including letters of recommendation and test scores) after May 28, 2027.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>List of faculty interested in taking MS students:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/department-of-pharmaceutics\/faculty\/\">Please take a look at our faculty page<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Additionally, several Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Department of Pharmacy faculty members are taking MS students for the Pharmaceutics MS Program: <a href=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/people\/abhinav-nath\/\">Abhinav Nath<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/people\/mike-guttman\/\">Miklos Guttman<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/people\/rheem-totah\/\">Rheem Totah<\/a>, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/people\/libin-xu\/\"><strong>Libin Xu,<\/strong><\/a> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/people\/lingtak-neander-chan\/\">Lingtak-Neander Chan,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/people\/brian-werth\/\">Brian Werth<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Department of Pharmaceutics offers an MS degree which is typically completed within two years as a terminal degree. The course work for the program is divided into four components:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Prerequisites which define the level of entry into the program<\/li>\n<li>Required core program<\/li>\n<li>Seminars and literature review<\/li>\n<li>Research<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Prerequisites<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>College-level mathematics including differential equations (college-level <span data-huuid=\"4124015164870657382\">Calculus 1 course that covers concepts of limits, derivatives, and the rate of change of functions<\/span>), equivalent to UW course Differential Calculus, MATH 124<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please see the <a href=\"\/department-of-pharmaceutics\/graduate-education-training-programs\/phd-program\/student-handbook\/\">Graduate Program Handbook<\/a> for the typical schedule of core requirements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Core Courses<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The MS degree entails an accrual of minimum 57 credits, of which 19 must be graded (the graded credit must be from graduate courses of 500 level or above). The additional credits include electives, seminar, journal club, research, and thesis study and writing. Students must complete a minimum of 24 credits of PCEUT 700 (Master\u2019s Thesis) for the degree. Please review the UW Graduate School Degree Requirements <a href=\"https:\/\/grad.uw.edu\/policies\/1-1-graduate-degree-requirements\/\">here<\/a> for more information. Of the 19 required numerically graded credits, 16 are derived from the following \u201ccore\u201d courses (see below) that are intended to give the student the necessary foundational knowledge in the field of pharmaceutical sciences. The other 3 numerically graded credits will come from an elective class.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PCEUT 502: Drug Disposition Science (2 cr)<\/li>\n<li>PCEUT 505: Concepts in Pharmaceutical Sciences I (3 cr)<\/li>\n<li>PCEUT 532: Clinical Pharmacokinetics (4 cr)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additional didactic core courses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>BIOST 511: Medical Biometry I (4 cr)<\/li>\n<li>MEDCH 501: Medicinal Biochemistry (3 cr)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Seminars and Literature Review <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PCEUT 520: Seminar (1 cr\/quarter; 3 quarters\/year until obtain 6 total credits)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>MS students are not required to make a presentation for PCEUT 520, but they may take the opportunity to present for the experience.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PCEUT 583: Journal club (1 cr\/quarter; 3 quarters\/year until obtain 6 total credits)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During the final examination week at the end of each quarter, all first-year graduate students are required to give at minimum ~10-minute research presentation as part of the course.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PCEUT 700 (variable credits)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>MS students will have selected a thesis advisor at the beginning of Autumn quarter in their first academic year, and must begin their laboratory research then. Due to the course work and research demands of the program, most students may find that after-class and off-hours are the best and most productive time for their laboratory research.<\/p>\n<p>MS students sign up for PCEUT 700 (Master\u2019s Thesis) until the defense of their thesis, in order to meet the research requirements of the program and the Graduate School.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Master\u2019s Thesis<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PCEUT 540 (1 cr; WIN and SPR quarters of the second year)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>MS students are required to submit a Master\u2019s thesis. The required PCEUT 540 course in Winter and Spring quarters of the second year will help the students with their writing along with help from their faculty advisor. The content of the thesis should be a research summary of their laboratory project. Under special circumstances and with the consent of the advisory committee, a comprehensive review of a relevant area of pharmaceutical research may be permitted.
