Husky Fight Song

You may not be aware that the University of Washington Huskies are looking for a new fight (spirit) song. Unfortunately, we're too late for the contest to suggest a fight (spirit) song that is "easy to remember" and "easy to sing."

The implication of this contest is that the old Husky fight (spirit) song was perhaps NOT easy to remember and NOT easy to sing. Here are the lyrics of Bow Down to Washington.

Bow Down to Washington,
Bow Down to Washington,
Mighty Are The Men
Who Wear the Purple and the Gold,
Joyfully We Welcome Them
Within the Victors Fold.
We Will Carve Their Names
In the Hall of Fame
To Preserve the Memory of Our Devotion.
Heaven Help the Foes of Washington;
They're Trembling at the Feet
Of Mighty Washington,
The Boys Are There With Bells,
Their Fighting Blood Excels,
It's Harder to Push Them Over the Line
Than Pass the Dardanelles.
Victory the Cry of Washington...
Leather Lungs Together
With a Rah! Rah! Rah!
And O'er the Land
Our Loyal Band
Will Sing the Glory
Of Washington Forever.

Suppose that the UW Alumni Association (more than 50,000 graduates!) is concerned about the selection of a new fight (spirit) song to replace the old fight (spirit) song. In short, their point of view is that the old song (see lyrics above) could be "juiced up", "livened up", "hotted up", "spiffed up", etc. They believe that Bow Down to Washington is just fine, it only needs to "get some motion", "get a move on", "shake and shimmy", etc.

Suppose that they hire you to use JavaScript Motion Tween to create a web page presentation of these lyrics!

Your job is to create a web page that would do two things: (1) Present lyrics, and (2) Animate some visuals to illustrate the lyrics.

Your job can be simplified when you recognize that Bow Down to Washington is actually only four sentences. This means that you have only to create four screens. Each of these four screens would present one sentence of the song Bow Down to Washington and at the same time present appropriate animated graphics.

First sentence

Bow Down to Washington,
Bow Down to Washington,
Mighty Are The Men
Who Wear the Purple and the Gold,
Joyfully We Welcome Them
Within the Victors Fold.

Think of the compelling graphics that could be used to animate this sentence! For example, here is Jean-Leon Gerome's painting "Police Verso". Don't you think that this catches of the spirit of the mighty men of the purple and gold?

Second sentence

We Will Carve Their Names
In the Hall of Fame
To Preserve the Memory of Our Devotion.

Think of the compelling graphics that could be used to animate this sentence! For example, here is Caspar David Friedrich's "Graves of Ancient Heroes". Can you feel the awe of the gravestones of the fallen, ancient heroes?

Third sentence

Heaven Help the Foes of Washington;
They're Trembling at the Feet
Of Mighty Washington,
The Boys Are There With Bells,
Their Fighting Blood Excels,
It's Harder to Push Them Over the Line
Than Pass the Dardanelles.

Think of the compelling graphics that could be used to animate this sentence! One could, of course, concentrate on the "boys with bells" aspect, but instead, here is a photograph of the Dardanelles during World War One, 1914-1918.

Fourth sentence

Victory the Cry of Washington...
Leather Lungs Together
With a Rah! Rah! Rah!
And O'er the Land
Our Loyal Band
Will Sing the Glory
Of Washington Forever.

Think of the compelling graphics that could be used to animate this sentence! For example, here's a picture of a healthy human lung and another one which has become 'leather-like' due to emphysema.

Find your own graphics, don't use these examples. Create a web page with JavaScript Motion Tween that presents four screens in a timed sequence, each screen presenting one sentence and animating that sentence with appropriate graphics.

Here is a sketch of a possible web page architecture. It includes the sentence of the song and then the compelling, moving visuals.

When you've finished, add this project to your course deliverables page.
