Goals:
  1. Identify key physical and biological effects of lateral mixing
  2. Highlight gaps in knowledge
  3. Identify promising methods to address these gaps
  4. Document the group's findings for ONR managers
A Pilot Study on Lateral Mixing will take place on October 11-12, 2006 in the Hardisty Conference Center of APL-UW. During the Pilot Study, a working group of physical and biological oceanographers will review the scientific understanding of lateral mixing mechanisms in the ocean and identify directions for future research, including field studies, numerical modeling, and other approaches. The group will summarize its recommendations for ONR program managers in a written white paper to serve as an aid to future program decisions.

The Pilot Study is organized by Drs. Pascale Lelong at Northwest Research Associates, Miles Sundemeyer at U-Mass Dartmouth, and Kate Edwards at APL-UW. It is funded by the Physical Oceanography (322PO) and Optics and Biology (322OB) programs at the Office of Naval Research.
