Science Service Learning

Science Service Learning, CHEM 197/297/397 is a series of courses offered through the Department of Chemistry that gives students the chance to combine their science backgrounds with community service activities.  Recent service activities include:

1) leading young children in science activities at Seattle Emergency Housing

2) teaching middle school students water quality monitoring, ethnobotany and kayaking as part of the "Science by Kayak" project (spring quarter only)

3) aiding high school students in performing DNA sequencing as part of the "High School Human Genome Project"(winter and spring quarters)

4) mentoring high school science students at Garfield High School.

Science at the Movies

Science at the Movies is a free film and lecture series hosted by the University of Washington Department of Chemistry. Our goal is to introduce and enlighten the public about the science occurring at the university and to engage them in thinking critically about the science portrayed in the movies. Our next event is scheduled for Monday, October 24, 2005, at 7pm in Bagley Hall Room 131. Electrical Engineering Professor Blake Hannaford will present a talk entitled "How robots move- an overview of robot actuators" in conjunction with a showing of the movie "I Robot".
