Diversity and Affirmative Action

UW-AAUP supports the policy of increasing diversity through affirmative action. AAUP nationally has been involved in pioneering court cases tha thave helped to open academic opportunities and promote diversity.

UW-AAUP Statements

In 1997 Washington voters passed Prop 200 banning affirmative action provisions in hiring and university admissions. UW-AAUP is concerned about the implications for campus diversity and the educational mission of the University of Washington.  Here are two Op-Ed articles that members published in the Seattle Times:

Gender Discrimination lawsuit

Professor Dolphine Oda (School of Dentistry and an AAUP Executive Committee member) along with several other UW faculty sued the University in 2000 claiming that the UW practices gender discrimination in hiring and promotion. The case is moving towards trial. Many of the documents and filings are available on the Faculty Senate website at the following url:
