Faculty Collective Bargaining:

How it Works, Where it Works, and What it Can Mean at UW

A discussion with faculty leaders from around the country (10/1/02)

Don't miss this important meeting Friday, October 11, 3:00-5:00. Smith 120

Last year UW faculty gained the right of collective bargaining. It is time to talk about what that means. Would collective bargaining help us at UW? Would it complement or complicate the institutions of shared governance? Would it improve or harm the political capacity of our underfunded university? What would it mean for our academic stature?

The Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies and AAUP invite you to a forum on issues related to faculty collective bargaining at research universities. Representatives of the three major higher education unions (AAUP, WFT, and NEA) from several universities will talk about how collective bargaining works and what it might mean here. This is a chance to explore and discuss an issue that is going to be critical to our future.

Participants include:

* Marcus Harvey, west coast field representative of AAUP and former Vice-President for Bargaining in the United Faculty of Florida

*Arthur Hochner, Associate Professor of Human Resource Administration at Temple University, chief negotiator for Temple's Association of University Professionals (AFT)

* Pat Shaw, AAUP staff attorney, Washington, D.C., former director of Organizing and Services

* Marvin Smith, Professor and Chair of the Department of Electronic Media-Theater-Film, Eastern Washington University. Former president of United Faculty of Eastern Washington University (AFT/NEA) and led the bargaining team that negotiated the last collective bargaining agreement.

* Jim Sullivan, Emeritus Professor and former head of Academic Programs for the School of Art and Design, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Former President of the SIUC Faculty Association( NEA), helped lead the 1998 election victory for faculty bargaining.

The Friday forum is part of a two day conference: "Building Our Future: The Unions and Professional Organizations of UW and HMC" The conference will continue Saturday October 12.
