Announcements

March 13, 2008

  • Your paper2’s are finally posted on GoPost. Everyone’s should be up there, so if yours isn’t please email me asap.
  • The final paper can now be turned in Tuesday the 18th by 5pm without penalty. Hopefully this will give you some extra time to use the comments you just got back to improve this paper.
  • This changes the late paper policy as well. If you read the prompt you know that papers one day late, which would mean turned in by next Wed. at 5, receive one full grade point off and papers later than that will not be read and will receive no credit.
  • If you would like to receive comments back on your final paper, please tell me so in the comments section on Collectit where you submit your paper. If I don’t hear from you, this will probably be the last contact you get from me. Please submit your paper before Tuesday at 5. If you do write in the comments that you would like me to respond to your paper, I will post a commented up draft in your CollectIt box like normal. Don’t expect them before grades are due Monday the 24th.
  • Finally, today is my last scheduled day of office hours beginning in about an hour. I will, however, be taking appointments for the 1-4 timeslot for Friday and 2-4 on Monday if anyone is interested. If you are, please email me when you want to talk between 1 and 4 Fri and 2 and 4 Monday. I’ll fill the slots on a first email, first serve basis.

Several updates today.

  • All powerpoints are now uploaded to the Calendar.
  • Full prompts for essay 2 and the final are posted to the Requirements page. They are pretty much identical to the first prompt, as I have said in class. The only difference regards the late paper policy for the final so make sure you look it up. Don't forget, paper 2 is due tomorrow by 5pm.
  • I finished typing up your discussion notes on Danielewski. Some really good points were made and it seemed like on several of these topics groups worked out what would make for decent paper outlines.

Next week is a writing week for you all. We will not be meeting in class and I'll be hanging out in the EEG cafe from 1-3pm to answer questions or help you with drafts. The final paper is due Monday, Mar. 17 by 5pm.

February 25, 2008

As I announced in class, we will not be having class this Wednesday or Thursday (the 27th & 28th). Please begin Danielewski over the weekend. Since you are getting a few free days, please try to get at least halfway through.

February 5, 2008

Be sure to check today's PowerPoint as it gives the procedure for turning in your papers. The most important points to remember are that I am asking for your submissions on CollectIt with the following file name [uwnetid][paper#].[doc, docx, or rtf]. So mine would look like this: twelsh1.doc.
N.B. late papers lose one grade point for each day late. Papers in the wrong format are considered late. If you will have trouble meeting the deadline, please contact me 24 hours in advance [thursday by 5pm].

The prompt for our short papers is now posted in .pdf

GoPost discussions look great. I am especially pleased that you all are building off the initial claim paragraphs and taking them in other directions. You are constellating the text, webbing connections throughout. Keep it up and remember to work through the text, letting it speak for itself.

January 15, 2008

As promised, here are some posts to check out. The first one demonstrates some of the ways you all using the text, but not as the source for analysis, which is our goal. The second is from this week and I think both the claim and the response are strong examples. If you want to see more of my responses, click on my name in the list ofparticipants, although I think these two conversations represent just about the whole range of what I wrote.

I look forward to see how you all take up the conversations this week. The claims are really promising! Remember, your responses can always be made to redirect the conversation. Use these conversations to follow your interests through the text.

Keep up the good work. Focus on the text, working through what it is and how it is.

Finally, I got internet access long enough to update the website. Here is a list of the changes I made:

  1. I uploaded the writers signup sheet. Please double check me. I put dates in the boxes as well so you know when your conversation-starting claim paragraph is due online.
  2. Updated the 'links' page to include helpful writing references.
  3. Tried to check links through out the site to make sure they go someplace. Most should work now.
  4. Uploaded my powerpoints from class. You can find them on the 'calendar' linked from the date they were presented.

Again, I apologize for putting this up half finished. It should be rolling now. Please check around to see what is here.

I have also had a chance to read more GoPost conversations. They are looking pretty good. I'll post a link to some I like in particular after everyone has posted at 5pm.

Syllabus, the calendar, and the CoursePack are now online. CoursePack should also be available at Ave Copy today as well. Tomorrow is the first day of class and we will be talking about the syllabus and the course concept. I look forward to meeting all of you!
