Erosion and Deposition

UWT Demo Site by Thomas Tobiason

  Where does soil come from?

When rock is eroded and weathered, it breaks into smaller pieces and gets carried away. It eventually comes to rest when it is deposited somewhere else.

Vocabulary:

  • Erosion - when water, wind, or ice remove soil, clay or rock from an area.
  • Deposition - when water, wind, or ice deposit (leave behind) soil, clay or rock in an area.
  • Sediment - when material is deposited, it is called sediment.
