Genomics- The scientific study of genomes, esp. of their organization and evolution, using nucleotide sequencing
and gene mapping; the branch of molecular biology that deals with this.
1987 V. A. MCKUSICK & F. H. RUDDLE in Genomics 1 1/2 For the newly developing discipline of mapping/sequencing (including analysis of the information) we have adopted the term Genomics. We are indebted to T. H. Roderick of the Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, Maine, for suggesting the term. 1988 Pathol. & Immunopathol. Res. 7 119 (title) The genomics of the human homeobox-containing loci. 1992 Economist 24 Oct. 123/2 An entirely new field is being born, one that takes as its study not individual genes, but sets of them: genomics, as opposed to genetics. 2000 Times 7 Aug. 22/2 APB makes gene-sequencing machines,..and is expanding into protein analysis, a high-growth area in the genomics revolution.
