ASSIMILATION:

When one culture conforms totally to another, often to the negation of one's own culture.  Often results in total loss of culture of origin.  Many Eastern and Central European immigrants gave up their cultural identities in order to survive.  This often meant changing hard to pronounce names or hiding unfamiliar customs and traditions from others. One culture is also often held higher or more superior than the other and can result in internalized racism or bias where one's culture of origin is shameful or suppressed.
