Philippine Sea Experiments 2009 - 2010 - 2011

The Office of Naval Research is sponsoring a deep water propagation experiment in the Philippine Sea in years 2010 and 2011, with an associated "Pilot Experiment" in 2009. Some discussion and background on this experiment can be found at Dushaw's Deep Water Propagation Wiki.

Various bits are excerpted from other places to here for reference.

The tomography/thermometry array proposed by Scripps is shown below. This version was sent to me from P. Worcester in January 2008 shortly following the Tiger Team meeting in La Jolla.

Ambient noise predictions for the six sites (T1 - T5 are the "points of the pentagram, and T6 is the center) were computed using the DANM program, version 2.0 (beta.) The following parameters were used:

parameter value
propagation code ASTRAL 5.1
Wind speed database SMGC 2.0, March
Environmental database GDEM-V 3.0, March
Bathymetry database DBDBV 4.3
Shipping density database HITS 4.0
frequencies 25 to 500 Hz
depths 500m, 1000m, etc to the local bottom

Computations for each site are gathered in per-site netCDF files linked below.
