Noise is a serious problem in construction.

Most construction work is noisy - but few are louder than concrete chippingResearch at the University of Washington has identified high noise exposure levels (and high rates of noise-induced hearing loss) among construction workers, and little compliance with noise exposure standards. The good news is that many organizations are working hard to develop practical ways to prevent hearing loss in construction, and that there's a lot of information available on noise and hearing loss.

We have a variety of ongoing research projects on construction noise, including:

A study of noise and hearing loss in young construction workers
A study examining how effective several different interventions are at getting workers to use hearing protection
A study assessing whether it's possible to estimate a worker's noise exposure based on their predicted activities
A study evaluating whether professional trainers or construction supervisors are more effective at delivering hearing conservation training to construction workers

NEW! New York City adopts more restrictive noise regulations for construction work.
