Why It Is Time
Browsers Want Standards-based HTML
- Newer browsers have a "standards mode"
- Mozilla (and Mozilla-based browsers,
such as Netscape 6, Netscape 7, Camino, Galeon,
Phoenix/Mozilla Firebird, and Beonex), Mac IE 5,
Windows IE 6, Safari and Opera 7
- The browsers look for a DOCTYPE statement
declaring the version of HTML being used
- Non-standard pages are interpreted in "quirk mode"
- Less likely to be presented to way the page author wants
- Sticking to standards means your page is more likely to display
the way you want it to on a wide range of browsers
