During the summer of 2002, thirteen students from the United States and Canada worked at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. During our time there, we created a document analyzing the political and technical motivations for a human mission to Mars.
From our research and personal experiences, we believe that we need a grass-roots effort to involve the public to initiate congressional consideration for a human mission to Mars. We believe there are three principal driving forces for going to Mars: Exploration, Education, and Economics. In our paper we outline the benefits obtainable from a human mission to Mars to these three important aspects of Society. It's great reading and well worth your time. We hope you will come to the same conclusions we've arrived at in our study, and be encouraged to push for a Human Mission to Mars in our lifetime! ![]() The Humans to Mars Project was conceived and written by the 2002 NASA Ames Astrobiology Academy: Monica Byrne Jeeshan Chowdhury Eric Collins Brandon DeKock Bethany Ehlmann Doug Grant Michael Hannon Stuart Ibsen Jessica Kinnevan Wendy Krauser Julie Litzenberger Tim Marzullo Bekah Shepard with special thanks to Doug and Christy O'Handley, David Lamb, Emily Schaller, and many others. 2002 NASA Academy Web Site |
