El Dorado 6/10-6/11/05

Trip Report

What can I say about El Dorado?  This is probably one out of the five or six climbs I have been wanting to do this year, more than any.  I gave this mountain all I had, and a little more, and it didn't disappoint me for a second.

I rode with David to the trailhead.  This was a good chance to climb with him as we are going to be climbing Mt. Whitney and spending a couple of weeks together in Yosemite later this month.  We got to the Marblemount Ranger Station where we met our climb leaders, Bill and Gary.  I hadn't talked much with Bill before this, and he seemed knowledgeable and experienced.  Gary is a real salty character, and that is appreciated on climbs like this.

The last two guys, Dwayne and John, were basic climbing students like us.  Dwayne is an all-around good guy with a great, positive attitude.  John is a real eccentric, very patient and approachable.

Pictures!
It was a tougher than expected hike up, as David trudges along. Time to take a break in an early boulder field. We had a front-row seat of beautiful Mt. Johannesburg! Setting up camp at a snow field at 6500 ft

Chris and David get their gear together for the summit push. Climb Leaders Gary and Bill in the background. God Johannesburg looks great! Dwayne looks at a far range as we ascend to the top of the first ridge. Looking in the other direction there's El Dorado! But will it be that clear when we get there?

We descend down into a snow field below Inspiration Glacier. Chris making his way up to Inspiration Dwayne takes a breather. Once on the glacier, time to rope up!

Look at those views to the west! The 'knife-edge ridge' of El Dorado shows itself. The fog begins to settle in. Time to finish this climb.

The rope team spreads out as we near the base of the summit ridge. To the east is Moiraine Lake. Up the ridge we go. The fog becomes so thick we can only see each other as ghostly figures.

The summit is close, be careful! One step too far to right or left and you're toast! The Crew at the top! Chris happy to be up high. It was a great hike fellas!
