Blog Comment Spamstorm

| | Comments (1)

This morning my weblog received 221 spam comments from some complete slimeballs at a domain known as rulezz.biz. May they rot in hell as they choke on mouthfulls of their prescription drugs and buzzards pick at their entrails.

But I stand and salute Jay Allen for his wonderful MT-Blacklist - a wonderful anti-spam plugin for Movable Type. Thank you, Jay, for saving my day!

I'm going to try to keep this weblog open for comments, but if this happens more, I'll have to re-evaluate whether it's worth it - sigh. Another public space ruined by cruel avarice and greed.

One simple tactic which keeps the robot comment spammers at bay is simply re-naming the mt-comments.cgi to something else, and changing the 'CommentScript' directive in mt.cgi to point to that name as well.

This doesn't stop the (very) few spam-by-hand people, but it locks out the spambots (until they learn how to detect the comments script from the page itself).
