Off to Dartmouth next week
Next week I'll be at the Common Solutions Group meeting at Dartmouth University in beautiful Hanover, New Hampshire.
The Common Solutions Group is a group of senior central computing folks from a self-identified group of major research universities in the US. The group is small, consisting of something like 25 institutions, and meets three times a year. That makes it a really interesting forum for considering topics of common interest and actually making real connections with really smart people working on the same sort of things we do.
This time the meeting topics include: a discussion of how universities are making decisions about buying technology versus building it themselves, and the role of open source efforts in that; an effort to try to quantify the costs of the recent Microsoft security problems to our campuses; the use of web services on our campuses; and some continued work on our collaboration with the Open Source Application Foundation on the development of a version of the Chandler personal information manager software specifically designed to meet the requirements of higher education institutions.
I hope to be doing some updates from the meeting on these specific topics as it progresses.
