ANTERIOR ISCHEMIC OPTIC NEUROPATHY

1. Ischemic infarction of disc; most common site in optic n. for infarction (supplied by post. ciliary aa.)
2. Part of diff. dx for vis. loss in anyone over 50
3. Clin. pres: arcuate field loss, or altitudinal defect (i.e., above a certain horiz level), or total vis. loss
4. n.b. papilledema us. not accompanied by vis. loss
5. Types: idiopathic (2? to systemic vasc. dis.), non-arteritic, arteritic (e.g. giant cell arteritis)
6. Px: "waxy pallor" of disc; different from papilledema
