Accessing Remote Mailboxes
The Three Access Paradigms
Offline: messages are fetched by the client and deleted from the
server.
Online: messages are left on the server and manipulated
remotely.
Disconnected: a "cache" copy is made on the client before
disconnecting, later client reconnects and resynchronizes with the
server.
In both online and disconnect, email is left on the server, this is
important when people use different computers at different times to
access their messages.
