Urban Sustainability

Urban sustainability is a topic that is gaining much attention around the U.S. and other nations. I will introduce some recent initiatives that are being done at the local government level. These innovations address coupled biophysical and social aspects of sustainability in cities. In these approaches natural systems are integrated with cultural and built systems.


Review the following web sites and documents to prepare for
lecture and discussion on March 6.

As you look over the materials, use the study questions to prepare for class discussion.

Study Questions

1. How do we know when we've reached sustainability in urban settings
(as compared to rural or wildland landscapes)?

2. What are the key elements of sustainability in cities -
or what are the elements that are needed to make it happen?

3. What is meant by green infrastructure?

4. Think about the neighborhood where you live. Is it a sustainable community?
List 3 things that would improve its sustainability performance.

5. Should sustainability practices be voluntary or required by regulations? Why?
