Vantage Cragging

March 13th, 2010
Words By Evan

Yesterday Kris, Ava, Dave and I drove out to Vantage for what turned out to be a beautiful sunny day. We started with Hakuna Matata, a 5.10b bolted arete. Next was Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, a 5.8 bolted face climb. I then lead Split Beaver, a 5.9 hands to fingers crack, my first non-ice/mixed gear lead of the season. I had a bit of difficulty with a few sections that weren't very hard physically, but required me to muster my mental faculties. Dave got about 2/3 of the way up, his first ever crack climb (he also topped out Hakuna Matata after some encouragement from the rest of us, equal to his most difficult outdoor climb). Ava had some difficulty but topped out and Kris made it look like a 5.2. While Kris was climbing I went to follow a 5.11b face to crack climb that an acquaintance climbing nearby had lead. His partner was unable to finish it, so he asked me to. About 1/4 up the climb I fell while switching my feet on a small hold and dislocated my left shoulder. It popped back in about 5 seconds later but spelled the end of the day and weekend for me. Kris was hung over and Dave and Ava were tired, so we called it a day and gorged ourselves at Tacos Chalitos.
