Mazama Campout

October 2008

So, this is kind of a retrofit, since I don't have a TR to draw from, but here it goes. For the Mazama campout, Evan, Obadiah, and I decided we were going to give Spontenaity Arete a go weather forcast be damned(it called for rain).

We left Seattle the night before the climb and bivied underneath the carport of Michelle's cabin which was really nice since it kept us dry. We awoke early and drove to the base of the route where conditions actually didn't look to bad. We did the approach, but then got a little bit lost/confused about where the route actually started. I ended up leading a pitch that wasn't part of the route. After a while however, we found some rap anchors and found the true start of the route.

I lead the first pitch, which was actually pretty scary. It had started raining, and in boots the whole surface was pretty slick for feet. Obadiah was climbing in crampons, and found it to work much better. I remember jamming in a crack, and having water running down my sleeve directly into my coat ... Awesome.

Obadiah led the next pitch which would turn out to be our last. We set up a rappel on an old snag, and got into the gulley where we came down. After that, it was a short deproach and a return to camp where a full keg greeted us. We hung up our stuff to dry as people filtered back into camp and we set up for some cooking and slacklining.

The next day we did some cragging at fun rock. All in all, this was a great CC campout!
