Internship Opportunities with Federal Agencies

Application Deadline: Friday, November 20

Internship Opportunities Winter/Spring 2010 with Federal Agencies:

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO)

U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC)

These unique, high-level internships offer a great opportunity to see how sociology connects to the working world while at the same time earning sociology credit. These internships are offered exclusively through the Sociology Department as part of our Practicum in Sociology of Work and Organizations Course, Sociology 494D.

In these internships you will provide a public service by directly helping to address discrimination in the workplace and housing. At the same time, you will develop concrete skills desired by employers, with the potential for hire in these agencies. In fact, two past practicum students now work full-time at the Department of Labor as compliance officers.

What is required by these internships?

Both internship opportunities at the EEOC and HUD/FHEO involve assisting in the investigation of charges of discrimination, which includes intake interviewing/counseling, investigative planning and development, case analysis and making disposition recommendations, among other tasks. Click here for detailed descriptions of the internships and the application.

What is the time commitment?

This is a two-quarter commitment: winter-spring '10. Students will receive five graded credits as part of Soc 494D in winter and then can apply for 3-5 additional credits with Soc 399 in the subsequent quarter. During the first quarter, students must commit to working a minimum of 6 hours/week for 9 weeks at the agency where they are placed. There is also 6 hours of preliminary training, which will be coordinated after students are selected.

Who can apply?

Juniors and Seniors are encouraged to apply, especially those who can show some interviewing experience and high interpersonal skills. Preference will be given to Sociology majors, but we will consider all applications.

How to apply?

We will require a short application for each position, including a one-page statement of purpose, which will also serve as a writing sample. You are welcome to apply for more than one position. We can accept a total of 8 students: 6 at HUD and 2 at EEOC.

DEADLINE for APPLICATIONS: Friday, November 20, 2009. Click here for the application.
