Symmetry: The Art of Mathematics Hillyard/Rasmussen

Class 4 Outline

I) Last Class

	A) Any questions or comments
	B) Remember: construction quiz on Monday 4/10

II) Assignment 3

	A) Group exercises
		1) problem 1(a), each group chose an example to share with the class on the white board
		2) do the same with 1(b)
		3) do the same with 2(a) & 2(b)
		4) Problem 3, each group share their constructions and chose one to present at the white board

III) Reflections: the mathematical view revisited

	A) “mirror” image in a line

	B) mathematical description
		1) in terms of formal construction using compass and straight edge

	C) Group exercise: As a group, write out (describe) how to make a reflection across a given line.
You should assume your audience is a college student that hasn’t taken this course.
You can use words alone or words and diagrams to illustrate, but not just diagrams.

IV) Break

V) Reflections revisited

	A) Reflections from a mathematical view: in terms of construction using compass and straight edge
		1) example: instructor do a line segment on one side of reflecting line
		2) group exercise: reflect a right triangle
		3) group exercise: do a rectangle

	B) Reflections from a practical view
		1) Group exercise: do the letter F, but not in the formal construction way

	C) Reflections from the artistic view: Group exercise
		1) each individual of the group draw a figure that has a vertical reflection and a vertical reflection
		2) each group choose the figure the group likes best
		3) have a group member put their figure on the board
		4) class decide which one it likes best

VI) Homework

	A) Hand out assignment 4 due Monday April 10, 2006.
	B) Remember Construction Quiz on Monday April 10.
