Symmetry: The Art of Mathematics Hillyard/Rasmussen

Assignment 1
Due Wednesday 3/29/06

Assignment #1: Write your Math/Art Autobiography

Tell a story about your experiences with Math and with Art. Things to think about before writing your story:

- What are your earliest memories of math? What are your earliest memories of art? How do these compare?

- What experiences have you had in school with math? What experiences have you had in school with art? How do your experiences compare?

- Does a specific teacher stand out in your memory as someone who had an impact on you in either of these subject areas?

- Were there any “turning points” where your success or attitudes toward math or art changed?

- Where do you see the place of math in your everyday life? Where do you see the place of art in your everyday life?

- How does/do your family/culture/friends/work/etc feel about math? How does this same group feel about art?

- What are your current attitudes toward math? What are your current attitudes toward art? Where do you think these attitudes came from?

- Have you every considered possible links between mathematics and art? What experiences tell you that there are or are not connections between these subjects?

- What goals do you have for this class?

There is no need to answer all of the above questions. Instead use them as a guide to reflect on the meaning of Math and Art to you. Give us a glimpse into your experiences, what they mean to you, and how they have contributed to your life and how you think about Math/Art today. We believe that this intentional, reflective thinking and writing exercise will be a great learning opportunity.

Your autobiography should be word processed and about 500 words in length.
