Jeff Hemsley is a third year PhD candidate at the iSchool and co-founder of the Social Media Lab at UW. He is interested in understanding how social media may provide a grassroots feedback mechanism for social change. Specifically, he intends to study viral information (as well as other types of information flows) as a type of influential cultural artifact that mediates agent's intentions and alters social structures. Social network analysis, process analysis and sociotechnical perspectives are all approaches he hopes to employ.
He earned a B.A. in Economics (summa cum-laude), with an emphasis in statistics, and a minor in Mathematics from Cal State East Bay.
Before returning to school, Jeff spent 15 years in the software industry as a Software Test Engineer and QA Manager.
He enjoys flying his stunt kites and playing cribbage and Magic the Gathering and making data visualization with R. Jeff and his wife live in a tiny house that they built before coming to Seattle.
