The Three-Step Analysis

  1. Introduce the text.  Who composed it? What is it? What is its title? (Provide citations when necessary.)
  2. Explain what the writer is arguing.  What is the writer’s claim?  Here, the writer should agree.  This helps you establish credibility by demonstrating what you’ve read, watched, or listened to and that you understand what the author is articulating, even if you disagree.
  3. State the implications of the explanation (step #2) for your own argument.  What do you make of your own explanation? Why does it matter? What's missing? Use the explanation. Apply it. Add additional quotes, if necessary.
