What's media activism?
For the purposes of this class, let's use William K. Carroll and Robert A. Hackett's definition of media activism in "Democratic Media Activism through the Lens of Social Movement Theory":
"organized 'grassroots' efforts directed to creating or influencing media practices and strategies, whether as a primary objective, or as a by-product of other campaigns" (84).
As we'll explore throughout the quarter, media activism is not limited to the Net. It isn't necessarily radical, either. In fact, it can be quite conservative. Whatever the qualification, one line of inquiry in this class will be the consideration of how media activism might enhance democratic practices and values. For example, how do we know when media is "fair"?
