The consultancies will develop the surface-transport masterplan (STMP), which will guide the development of transport in the Emirate up to 2030.

The project will support the Abu Dhabi government`s broader strategies and play an integral role in achieving the aims of `Plan Abu Dhabi 2030`, a comprehensive masterplan for the development of the emirate of Abu Dhabi. It is called the Abu Dhabi Urban Structure Framework Plan and was released in September 2007.

'This  project that will consist of short- and medium-term plans to transform Abu Dhabi`s transport into a world-class system.

A comprehensive plan and set of policies for non-motorised transport and freight logistics, as well as surface transport roads and road transport, bus, ferry, railway and mass transit services that will meet the people's and the economy's mobility needs will be developed.

Steer Davies Gleave will undertake the development, calibration, testing and supply of a multimodal network forecasting and evaluation model covering the entire Emirate of Abu Dhabi. This state-of-the-art transport model will be capable of evaluating and comparing the full range of impacts of alternative policy and plan options that will be developed through the STMP.'

Commenting on the development, Faisal Ahmed Al Suwaidi, Executive Director of Highways in the Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi said: "The STMP study will be carried out in close coordination and consultation with other government bodies such as the Urban Planning Council, municipalities in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region, and stakeholders such as the Chamber of Commerce, the Environment Agency, universities and developers. We want a world-best transport system.'
