The Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO) array [http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/tao/] consists of roughly 70 ATLAS moorings in the tropical Pacific Ocean. ARGs have been mounted on several of these moorings to obtain long-term time series of the ambient sound and to compare these data to co-located surface instrumentation. The ARGs are attached to the mooring line between 20 and 100 m depth. On several occasions, the surface instrumentation have been stolen by pirates, but the sub-surface instruments have not been detected, allowing continuation of data collection using the ARGs.
