Why gwangung?

Gwangung is the name of a prominent god in Cantonese opera. He was the god of artisans, warriros, thieves and other classes of Cantonese. As Frank Chin points out, Gwangung is just about the closest you can get to a true Chinese American mythological figure, as the character was a well known myth known to the early Chinese American immigrants.

Gwangung is also one of the characters in David Henry Hwang's first show, F.O.B., which won an Obie in 1980. This show was first done by the Stanford Asian American Theatre Project that year, directed by the author...and featuring lighting design by me. (hanging broom sticks from the ceiling to get the lights up there....).

So....now, you know.....
