Lower Drury Falls  (2/24/01)

It was Thursday or Friday and Phil was talking about skiing Enigma Gully.  Then Dave swung by my desk at work and started talking about Drury Falls.  I wanted to have my cake and eat it too, so when Phil said he thought Sunday would be better for Enigma I told Dave I'd drive out to the falls with him on Saturday.

Upper Drury Falls is sustained WI 4-5 and a bit beyond Dave's and my ice climbing ability so the plan was to just do some of the lower pitches.  We borrowed a rubber raft from Jeff to get across the Wenatche River and headed out to Leavenworth.

(Some of these pictures are taken by Dave and some by me.  They are all scanned by Dave and I may or may not get around to scanning some more.)

Dave hiking up in the morning.  It's as warm as it looks.  Upper Drury can be seen center top.

Dave in the gully on the approach.  This wasn't nearly as steep or commiting as it looks.

The first pitch of the falls proper is on the right.  Some group psychology caused Dave and I to solo up the right most portion of ice.

Me soloing the first pitch.  It was a lot scarier than it looks, especially when I got onto some rotten ice and sugary snow.  When I topped out I heard Dave say something about a rope being nice.  It started to set up an anchor but the screws wouldn't go in all the way.  By the time I had something feeble put together Dave was topping out.

The next pitch is the lower portion that's in sunlight.  Dave started to lead in spite of the fact that it was totally slushy.  He backed off.

Me rapping down off some trees to the left of the first pitch.

Me back in the rubber raft.  It was tight - Dave got in too shortly after he took this picture.  Then the current started to take us into some rapids just before we got to the other side.  The requisite paddling frantically was quite funny because one person had to paddle backwards, but who this person was would change whenever we did a 180.
